He is the recipient of the 1995 Senior Interculturalist Achievement Award from the Society for Intercultural Education, Training and Research for his lifetime contribution to the field.
Neal has had an incredible intercultural journey. This began in August 1963 while participating in his first intercultural program focusing on inter-racial and inter-religious prejudice and coincided with the March on Washington. That formative experience led to a lifetime committed to promoting intercultural understanding through research, writing, activism, academia, and founding of Global Dynamics one of the oldest and most prestigious Cross Cultural Training organization serving Fortune 500 corporations. As a teen, Neal led HS youths to protest against racism, in College he spent a year studying the impact of intercultural sojourns on identity and conducting Intercultural Dialogues between Arabs and Israelis while at Hebrew University immediately after the 6 Day War in 1967. He had attended St. Peter's College (a Jesuit University) as one of the few non-Catholics as an undergraduate. While studying at St. Peter's, Neal was part of a committee of students and faculty that met with Rev. Martin Luther King to discuss strategies to promote understanding across differences. Neal learned many lessons from this which he still practices today. Two years after graduating Neal was invited back to St. Peter's as a Professor where he remained over 33 years, retiring as Professor Emeritus in 2004. At St. Peter's he created the Foreign Study program and established a Multidisciplinary Intercultural Studies Program. Neal co-founded Global Dynamics in 1983 after spending a year at the East West Center working with many of the leading scholars in the field. GDI very quickly grew to be one of the largest and most successful Cross-cultural training organizations serving global corporate clients. Neal credits GDI's success to the customization of its solutions and the hundreds of GDI associates around the globe who are committed to GDI's vision and standards. Over the years he has taught over 10,000 students, GDI has trained over 100,000 corporate leaders, and Neal has made cherished friendships with people all over the globe. Neal has been a member of Sietar since 1978 and has attended most International and US conferences and was on the Board of Sietar International, was on the editorial board of IJIR, served as SIETAR International as Treasurer and received Sietar's Outstanding Senior Achievement Award in 1995. This journey all began from a single youth program. Neal is always looking for the next opportunity to learn from others. Neal has been in happy and fulfilling intercultural marriage for 38 years and has two daughters (one in the field) and two twin infant grandsons. Though a founding and regular Sietar NY member, he now spends much of his time in Aventura, Florida a multicultural city near Miami.
